About Us

Our Vision

Our vision is for a community that understands and responds to the impact of mental illness on families and carers and the many people who are living with a mental illness.

Our Mission

Mental Health Carers ARAFMI NSW Inc. is a community organisation of families, carers and friends of people living with a mental illness which encourages an active membership from among all of the diverse communities of NSW, which is informed by their experiences and provides support, education and advocacy in order to help them effectively fulfill their caring role.

Our History

The Mental Health Carers Australia grew out of the national movement of ARAFMI organisations across Australia. Originally ARAFMI was an anconym for Association of Relatives And Friends of the Mentally Ill. The first ARAFMI group was formed in Sydney in 1975 by a concerned group of carers who identified the need for a service that would specifically address the concerns of carers, relatives and friends. The movement quickly spread to other States and to the Territories and ARAFMI became the primary provider of services for carers of people with a mental illness in Australia. Mental Health Carers ARAFMI on the Coast was established in 1976. CLICK HERE to read more about ARAFMI's history on the Central Coast.
